McCormick's Creek State Park
Spencer, Indiana

April 8 - 10, 2005

Our first camping trip of the year. :)

I took William's asthma journal with me so I wrote down what we did each day so I wouldn't forget anything!
If I hadn't done that...this would be a short webpage. lol! Pictures are at the bottom!

We drove down Friday to McCormick's Creek just outside of Spencer, Indiana. We got there around 4:15pm. We picked a site that was near the playground and near the shower house. The next time we stay there, we will either stay at site 63 or we will stay as far away from the playground as possible!

After Vince & I got the camper set up and level, I took the kids to the playground. They played for a while and then we went for a bike ride/walk. A little later (while I was getting the inside of the camper ready, they went for a bike ride/walk with Vince. William was the one on the bike, Vince & I were the ones walking. Grace was in an umbrella stroller. When they got back from their walk/ride with Vince, William took off to the playground without telling us where he was going. One minute he was there, the next minute, he was gone. He's lucky he didn't get the snot knocked out of him. Instead, we just made him stay at our camp site. We were right beside the playground, but we couldn't really see the playground. There a bunch of brush between us and it and we had to walk along a path to get there. So we didn't want the kids there without one of us with them. Vince fixed hot dogs & grillers & we had some cottage cheese & chips for dinner. That's the great thing about camping, fixing almost everything over the campfire! Hot dogs & grillers are just better roasted over an open flame. We put the kids to bed around 8:30. Grace was being a BRAT. She didn't go to sleep until about 10. She kept w hispering William, William! He was OUT so we had to keep telling her to be quiet.

Saturday, April 9
William was up before the sun. I couldn't have just died. I didn't sleep well. The radio in the camper beeps every hour on the hour. Plus the mattress on our bed isn't the softest so my back was hurting. I'm positive William was up between 5:30 and 6. Grace was up at 6:30. I looked at the clock when I heard her. I fixed chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast around 7:30. Then realized that I left the butter & syrup at home. The kids didn't mind, but I would have liked them better all dressed up. It got quite cool Friday night and it was too cool to go play or bike riding so we headed into Bloomington to look for a Toys R Us. We were looking for a jogger/stroller thing to hook onto the back of a bike (when we get one) so we can pull Grace along and William can ride his. We found a Dicks' Sporting Goods at the College Mall. They had one for $189. I like the one I had seen at the Toys R Us in Terre Haute better and it was $20 cheaper so we passed on it. We did pick up some fire starter sticks and tablecloth clamps though. It was just windy enough that I could see our tablecloth blowing away.

Can you believe Bloomington doesn't have a Toys R Us? How lame is that? So we asked how to get to Wal-Mart. It was clear on the other side of town. So we headed over there. We found a jogger/stroller there for $107. It wasn't the same as the one in Terre Haute, but it worked out well. We also picked up helmets, knee & elbow pads for the kids.

Sometime between us getting back and leaving for the walk, Grace slipped off our bed and hurt her ear. You know where your ear connects to your head, it looked like it had pulled apart. Not enough to like lose an ear, but enough to make it bleed and of course she had to have a band-aid!

We came back & went for a walk. Oh what a walk. I had Vince check the mileage Sunday at it was just over 1 mile one direction and that doesn't include the 3 times we walked down to the creek and back up. The first time we walked down to the creek, there was a huge set of stairs. There were 4 landings. From the top to the first landing had 26 steps and I'm guessing that there were 26 steps between each landing. We took some pictures of the kids on the bank and then decided to cross the creek. We were trying to find the fastest way to the waterfall. I had to remind Vince that our jogger/stroller was at the top of the hill. Anyway, we crossed the creek and walked along that bank for a little while. Vince found a spot where William could cross without having to be carried so that is where we crossed at. That was fun. Then it was back up all of those steps. Shew! Then we kept walking toward the falls. We got to where the turn to come toward the campgrounds is. There is a bridge there and we decided that was far enough. We went down a path to the water where William & I took our shoes & socks off and played around a little. VERY little. That water was ICE cold! We left Grace's shoes & socks in the stroller. She got her toe in and that was enough for her. It was too cold. While Vince had the camera and I was trying to coax Grace to put her foot in, William decided to got barreling across the creek. He had already slipped once and got part of his shorts wet. He didn't learn his lesson that the rocks were slick. He fell completely in. He didn't get his hair wet, but his entire body was in the water. Now I need to make a note here. The water wasn't any deeper than the thickness of his body with him laying on his back. When he fell, he landed on his rear end. It was hilarious (since I knew he wasn't going to drown). He was slipping trying to get his footing to get up and was hollering, help me, help me. Vince had the camera or there WOULD be pictures. lol! After that Vince helped him walk about 3/4 of the way across. When they got back to the bank, I had Vince grab Grace and & I walked about 1/2 way across. After that, I was wondering how William stood falling in. So back up the path we went. We stripped William down to his shirt & undies. Both were still wet, but we didn't have anything to put on him. Lucky for him, it got up to about 79 degrees. It was only supposed to be around 70 when I had last checked the weather!

When we got back, we changed William, ate & went back to the playground. The kids played there for quite a while. William acquired a new nickname from all the girls. He decided he was going to cluck like a chicken (which was driving me NUTS) and they all started calling him chicken boy. After a bit, I corralled them back to the camper. We went for another walk or two and then loaded up in the truck to go to the nature center. We didn't get to spend a lot of time there because we got there 10 minutes before it closed.

After we got back, the kids & I went back to the playground, while Vince fixed hamburgers & hot dogs. Then we went for another walk. Vince & William went for another while I had Grace distracted in the camper. We had the kids in bed by 9:45. Grace was asleep before that. I was SO WORN OUT. We figure we walked between 3 & 5 miles today. My old body just isn't use to that.

Sunday, April 10
William got up at 5:30 to pee. Ugh. 5:30! We are going to have to put something on our windows to make it darker in there in the morning. He tried clearing off the couch to lay down there, but Vince made him go to his bed. I think the kids got up around 8:30. We had chocolate chip pancakes again. The kids LOVE chocolate chip pancakes and I usually only fix them when we are camping...to make it a special treat, ya know. Vince & William went for a walk & Grace played with playdoh while I wrote this in William's asthma journal.

After I was done writing that up, we went to the playground to play. Most everyone around us was packing up or already gone so there weren't nearly as many kids there. Vince packed up most of the outside stuff while we were at the playground. After the kids & I got back, we re-heated the left over hamburgers & hot dogs to eat. Then I started getting the inside ready for us to leave. Once I was done, we grabbed my camera and headed to the falls overlook to get a 'head-on' picture of the falls. William REALLY wanted to go down to the creek and play, but we didn't have the time for that (and I didn't bring extra clothes to the falls) lol!. We went back to the camper, the kids stayed in the truck while we hooked the camper up. Then we headed to the dump station & Vince dumped the black & grey water tanks & we headed home. We got home around 1:33.

I have to mention that Grace didn't fall out of her bed at all! And William didn't have any accidents either!

Overall, we had a good time. The kids fought too much. I hope that they don't keep that trend or we will sell the camper. I didn't get to relax AT ALL. And that is the whole point of going camping...
