West Boggs Park, Logoottee, Indiana

October 16 - 18, 2004

Our first 'solo' camping trip. We did this one with just us...no help from friends...no running back home. It was Great!

We were going to go down on Thursday night after I got off work, but I had forgotten one small detail...William had an asthma check up with Dr Macke in Indy on Friday. So we decided to go down Friday evening. Plans changed Friday afternoon. The camper wasn't pack & we hadn't gotten groceries yet. We were not ready to go. So I called to make sure they still had plenty of campsites (and they did) so we waited until Saturday to go down.

We got down there at about 12:30 or 1ish. I helped Vince get the camper backed in and then we started setting it up. My job is the wheel choks (?), boards that need to go under the tires & jacks and extending the jacks. Vince has to unhook it from the truck, make sure it is level, plus hookup the water and electric. We let the kids out to run around while we did this. The site that we stayed at was fairly secluded and we could let them run with no fear of them getting hit by a car...golf cart maybe, but not a car. ;)

Vince got the water hooked up and went to hook up the electric. The cord on the camper is only like 30 feet long. Guess what? It wasn't long enough. So we finished doing everything else and headed into Logoottee. Right outside of West Boggs Park is a Citgo station. I went in there to see where the closest Wal-Mart was...20 miles away. Logoottee does have a Pamida, but the lady didn't think they had the rv electrical extension cords that we needed...she failed to mention that SHE DID! So, off we go to the closest Wal-Mart in Washington. We decided to grab two 25-foot RV electrical extension cords, Vince & I got toboggans because it was supposed to be cold and we headed back. Good thing we grabbed 2 cords...we needed them BOTH! So we used the 30 ft cord from the camper, one whole extension cord and 3-5 foot of the last cord. Wow. On the way back, we stopped at Pamida. I had forgot to put the kids' blankets in the camper so we bought them blankets and we bought a body pillow to lay on the floor by Grace's bunk (Yes, she did fall out of bed again....Sunday night).

The campsite we chose was AWESOME though. We were in the bend of the curve, in the very back and it was so quiet! We felt so secluded. It was wonderful! SEE:
Randy had given us some awning lights. They worked out great (once we went to the Citgo station and bought an extension cord). After we got the electric hooked up and a campfire started, we went for a walk around the campground. William rode his bike and we put Grace in an Umbrella stroller. I think we walked 2-3 miles. I was amazed that Willaim stayed with it! We took a couple of breathers, but otherwise, just walked. We seen a squirrel's nest , beaver homes (Are these called dams?), watched boaters on the lake and Sunday we seen a crane! ... We roasted hot dogs and made smores when we got back. The kids went in and ate because it was cold and the smoke from the campfire was unpredicatble. After they ate, they just stayed in and watched movies. Vince and I stayed out and watched the fire.

Sunday: We slept in until 8:30 or 9. I got up and made chocolate chip pancakes. William gobbled them down. Grace on the other hand wasn't feeling to well this weekend. Seems she was trying to poop her brains out. I bet she lost 2-3 pounds this weekend. After that, we ran into town to Buehler's and got milk, the smallest container of laundry detergent they had, and a new lighter (ours isn't working right). Then we headed back. We went for another walk today and took a TON of pictures. I put some of them out here, but not all. After the walk, we decided we needed to get Grace to eat 'something', so she and Daddy went to McDonald's while William and I did a load of laundry and played on the swing. When Vince and Grace got back, the kids ate their happy meals and swang while we waiting for the clothes to finish drying.

The rest of the night, the kids spent in the camper watching tv. Vince and I hung out by the campfire watching it burn, listening to nature be nature and talked. We figured out that his truck does ok pulling the camper short distances, but we HAVE to have a Dodge diesel BEFORE we go to Mt Rushmore. So we talked about that a while.

Here are the rest of the pictures that we took this weekend:

I finally decided that I was having to sit WAY to close to the fire to stay warm so I went in and headed to bed. Vince waited for the fire to die down a little more and then he came in as well.

Monday: 3:30am...William woke me that he had had a nightmare. Most disturbing to me because...the nightmare was that we left him at home alone. :(
After I comforted him and got him back to bed, I realized it was thundering and lightening. So I got Vince up and we went out, took our lights down and put our awning up. After that, it started raining... and it rained and rained. It was still raining when we got up. We ate breakfast, got things put away for pulling the camper home and tried waiting the rain out a little. We finally decided that it wasn't going to stop so we went out and finished hooking up the camper in the rain. LESSON LEARNED: When you put up the awning because of rain...put up the indoor/outdoor carpet too! That was a pain to sweep off all the wet leaves!

I drove the camper from our campsite to the dump station and then on to Bloomfield! Yikes! I was a white-knuckled nervous wreck! It probably wouldn't have been so bad, but...it was raining and the roads had grooves in them that had filled with water. I could also feel the camper or back of the truck (whichever...really doesn't matter) swerve every once in a while. People behind be were getting frustrated because I couldn't (more like wouldn't) go above 50 mile/hour. We pulled over near Crane and put the sway bar on. I really don't think it helped much. I had a car pass us and it almost hit another car head on. Glad I'm never in that big of a hurry anymore. When we got to the Pamida in Bloomfield, I pulled over and let Vince drive. Whew! What a relief that was!

After we got home, we started unpacking the camper. That felt like it took forever, but I was wearing Vince's big rubber boots. lol! Boy was I a sight and it was still raining. ;)

We had a great time though and it was really nice to get to spend some QUALITY family time. We didn't have to get on the kids hardly at all. It was wonderful!

I think this was our last trip for the season. I won't have another weekend off (with the exception of Oct 23-24) until Thanksgiving. So this is probably my last entry until Spring '05.
